Low Carbon Energy Development Centre
As part of CPI’s Sustainable Processing Centre (SUSPROC), the Low Carbon Energy Development Centre has specialist laboratories that are equipped to handle, test and develop fuel cell and hydrogen technologies. The Centre has access to an extensive range of partner organisations, with skills in analysis, process engineering and hydrogen systems.
The Development Centre, together with its experienced team, can offer technical support to product and project developers, OEM Systems integrators and manufacturers, thereby reducing the risks associated with the commercialisation of technology.
Building upon practical experience gained in a number of public demonstration projects, the Development Centre has been designed to support both companies working within the fuel cell and hydrogen industry and companies considering the industry as a potential new market.
The Development Centre is equipped with advanced fuel cell test stations, allowing diagnostic fuel cell testing and experimentation on a wide range of fuel cells, from single cell assemblies to 15 kWe systems. Dynamic load testing can be carried out on PEM, DMFC and SOFC systems, coupled with full data logging. The Centre also offers LABVIEW capability for fuel cell testing and control and CHEMCAD capability for the design and simulation of complete fuel cell systems.
Health and safety advice is also offered to fuel cell users on fuelling systems and design, as well as the analysis, identification and quantification of sulphur species present in fuels. This capability allows the performance of desulphurisation systems to be assessed and predicted.
Confidential and independent testing and evaluation services are also offered, allowing both manufacturers and consumers to evaluate the performance of their systems. Development facilities, incorporating private office space, are also available, allowing fuel cell companies and their staff to develop new and embryonic systems with minimal capital risk.
The modern laboratories can handle a range of fuels and the Development Centre also offers extensive hydrogen filling facilities, with the capability to refuel a wide range of applications, from metal hydride storage canisters to 35 and 70 MPa composite tanks.
