Boron trichloride is produced by reacting together one of the following sets of ingredients. In each case the reaction requires elevated temperatures.
•Boron trichloride (BCL3) is used as
•1. a chemical reagent in the pharmaceutical industry
•2. a source of boron for p-type doping of silicon by thermal
diffusion or ion implantation and dry plasma etching of aluminum
and its alloys
•3. a carrier gas, as a catalyst in organic reactions, for
manufacturing of electrical resistors
•4. a refractory coating on such articles as crucibles etc.
•5. the starting material for the production of boron nitride
•6. in refining metals such as aluminum, magnesium, zinc, and
copper alloys
•7. clean up castings of these metals8. the production of optical
fibers
